In March 2018, an important problem became evident in the municipality of Bahía de Banderas. In the LXXXII Ordinary Session of the Interstate Committee of Clean Beaches Jalisco-Nayarit 2018, the results of the sampling carried out by COFEPRIS in the waters of the Sayulita beach, showed high levels of contamination, affecting with concern the quality of sea ​​water and beaches. Especially when these are for recreational use in tourist centers, with the obligation to guarantee protection of the health of users.

On these same dates, it was when civil associations such as ADEPM and ProSayulita, in coordination with state and municipal government authorities, managed to make an investment of $31 million pesos, which were applied in the total rehabilitation of the wastewater treatment in the town of Sayulita. In addition, the corresponding studies were carried out in order to achieve an effective and definitive solution to this long-term problem.

It is now in this 2022, according to the latest samples taken, on April 4 in the waters of Sayulita beach, they yielded favorable results and well below the limit of 200 MPN/100 ml, levels required for beach certification.
